THINGS TO DOThe beach is of course one of the main features here at Mamboz which as the pictures show is one of complete beauty. Sri Lanka is an island nation with long empty stretches of beach but rather rough waters. Swimming in this area is only from December to April and never really a completely flat ocean. I mention this simply so that there are no surprises. Swimmers must exercise caution when in or near the water but not to fear it. Children are not encouraged to swim out into the waves but wading and walking the beach are of course hugely enjoyable for them. For those wanting to swim in season an experienced swimmer will accompany.
Mamboz is situated near the Kalametiya bird sanctuary which has a plethora of both land and water fowl to be observed. Beach seining with the local fishermen in the morning is always an interesting activity and a great method of exercise. After helping with the pull each person is rewarded with a handful or two of the catch which can be prepared for your lunch or dinner. The ancient rock temple of Mulkirigala is nearby and offers spectacular views along with interesting insights into ancient Buddhist ways and art. We are only 60 kilometers away from the famous Yala National Park which allows guests to view a myriad of animals in their wild setting. Elephants, wild boar, deer, crocodiles, buffalo, sloth bear and of course the stunningly beautiful leopard. For those interested in massage matthew the owner of mamboz offers thai massage to both inhouse and walk in guests by appointment. Thai massage is a full body stretch done fully clothed on the floor done in a beautiful beach pavilion. A must for those into bodywork. Alternatively, ayurvedic massage can also be organized should one want to experience the local ways. A short walk down the beach one neighbour offers an aqua wellness experience done in her saltwater pool, also by appointment.
